Hey everyone! For 2018 I’m picking up blogging again. I am so excited to share many things on my heart with all of you guys.
When I started thinking about what I wanted to share to kick off 2018, one idea came to mind. The very concept that has shaped most of my leadership style. One concept that I learned when I was in high school. Flush that toilet.
Many of y’all may be thinking, “Oh gosh..where is she going with this?” Just hang tight with me and it will all make sense. At least I hope.
It was 2012, I believe, and I was at Refresh, the Claremore Assembly of God youth group. I was sitting in chairs with all of the youth, eagerly awaiting the message. Jon Stem, the youth pastor, hopped on the stage and started with this scenario: “You walk into the bathroom and you really have to go. You hastily open the stall and there lies a toilet waiting to be flushed, and you’re pretty grossed out so you move to the next toilet.” He then asked, “How many of you would flush that toilet?” Not many of us raised our hands if I can remember correctly, but we were all very confused as to where he was going with this idea. “Just imagine how many people did the same thing that you did. Imagine how long that toilet was left unflushed. It takes a leader to walk up to that toilet and flush it. Someone to break the mold and do something out of the ordinary.”
From that day on, I walk through life telling myself, “Be a leader. Flush that toilet.” When life gets messy. When no one else wants to do that job. When everyone else walks away. Flush the toilet. There are times that I choose not to, to be completely transparent and there are people who can attest to this, but there is not one time that I don’t ask myself if I am going to be a leader and fulfill that duty anyways.
So my encouragement to you today is, flush that toilet. Especially when you’d rather not. You never know what beautiful things can come from breaking the mold. And at the end of the day, you can rest knowing you did not let those opportunities pass you by.
Flush that toilet.
