I am a Christian. This may be a bold statement or even uncomfortable for some. But it is true. I am a daughter of the Lord. At one point in my life, I was a “Christian”. I was one because my parents were and they took me to church. I didn’t have a relationship with Christ. All I knew were all of the “do’s” and “don’t’s” of Christianity. The Bible, at the time, were just old stories that I had to read at church. A sermon was when I developed my doodling skills. But when I really discovered who Christ is, my life changed.
When I discovered who Christ is and the relationship He wanted to have with me. I actually started to read the bible and find that being a Christian is far more than the “dos” and “don’ts”. The 10 Commandments became just ways to be a decent human being. And I found that the greatest calling for us as Christians is to love one another. Love is the center of our faith.
I am a Christian because He calls us to be a representation of His love to all of God’s children, just as He first loved us. A church isn’t for those who have it all together, it’s for those who are broken. We all sin, and I will love someone regardless of their choices because God loves me despite my flaws. He loves me and everyone else no matter what.
I am a Christian because I have been called to serve. I try to serve people with my whole heart even when I don’t feel like it. Jesus served everyone He encountered. He washed His disciples’ feet. He didn’t have to wash dirty, nasty feet, but He was humble and served his disciples. He continuously showed His love through service.
I am a Christian not because it is easy, but because although the road will be tough God is still with me. Every step I take closer to God, the enemy will try to stop me. But, God is still with me even in those moments. Sometimes I tried to blame God for the things going wrong in my life and prayed for Him to fix it. Looking back now it wasn’t His fault, but He used those moments to better prepare me for life. He loves me so much that He stays by my side.
I am a Christian because of many different things that have happened to me throughout my life. Through every season, He stuck by my side. Every time I read the Bible, He speaks truth into my life. He shows His love for me and provides guidance during my personal devotional time. I have never been truly alone because He loves me.
I am a Christian first and foremost because I believe Jesus Christ died on a cross to save us from our sins. I just want to talk about this for one second. God made himself human and knew full and well that He would die an excruciating death for us. He died for all people, even the ones who persecuted Him. He endured humiliation and suffering for us. His love for us is so strong that He would do all of these things so our souls would be with Him for eternity. He loves us so much that He would pay the ultimate sacrifice for our sins.
Sometimes Christianity can come off as a bunch of rules and can honestly turn into hate. But I am a Christ follower because of His love. His love trumps all hate. He saved the adulterer, He ate with tax collectors, He has shown us that He loves no matter what season we are in. He is a humble and serving God that loves all of His children equally. I am a Christian because of many different reasons that are quite too long to list, but these reasons are my main ones.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 ESV)
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34 ESV)
